Sport isn’t about performance – it’s about participation

Your child doesn’t need to be training for gold to benefit from sport-based movement.

From an OT perspective, it’s not about how well a child performs, but about having opportunities to move. Whether it’s kicking a ball, gliding on socks across the floor, or tossing beanbags during an ad break, all movement counts.

Through movement and play, children naturally practise:

These are life skills your child uses every day – not just in sport.

Movement matters even more when you do it together

Some of the most meaningful movement experiences happen with a parent or carer.

Moving together helps strengthen connection, boosts motivation, and shows children that movement can be fun, shared, and part of everyday life. It also turns ordinary moments into learning opportunities.

You don’t need special equipment or structured programs.
A cushion becomes a snowboard.
Rolled-up socks become a curling stone.
A hallway becomes a ski run.

When movement is playful and shared, children are more likely to join in and keep coming back for more.

Bringing the Winter Olympics home

The Winter Olympics are a great opportunity to talk about movement, try something new, and get active together as a family.

To make this easy, we’ve created a free “Watch & Move Challenges” guide with simple, playful activities you can try at home during ad breaks. Each challenge links an Olympic sport to everyday skills your child uses at home, school, and in play.
