Therapy Approaches We Use

Our practice is built on evidence, best practice and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Therapists

At Motivate Kids, we draw on a range of specialised, evidence-informed frameworks — always guided by the whole child, the family context and what is most meaningful to them.

Our therapists draw thoughtfully across these frameworks, guided by clinical reasoning, ongoing reflection and a deep respect for each child and family we work alongside.

Nine evidence-informed frameworks shaping our practice.

Each framework brings a distinct lens. Drawn together, they form the toolkit we apply with clinical reasoning and respect for every child and family.

The approaches we draw on.

Each is an established, evidence-informed framework our therapists are trained in.

Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI)

Specialised sensory-rich intervention with strict fidelity criteria

Developed by Dr A. Jean Ayres, ASI is a highly specific, evidence-based intervention delivered in a specialised sensory-rich therapy space. It supports children with Autism, dyspraxia, learning difficulties, attention and self-regulation challenges. Must meet strict fidelity criteria and is only delivered by therapists with advanced training.

DIR Floortime®

A relationship-based developmental framework

The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR) Model is a comprehensive framework centred on the understanding that children learn through their relationships and interactions with others. Floortime follows the child’s lead, building from their strengths and working through opening and closing circles of communication.

Interactive Metronome (IM)

Evidence-based neural timing assessment and training

An evidence-based assessment and training tool that measures and improves neural timing — supporting improvements in attention, focus, memory, processing speed, executive functioning and motor skills. Can be used within sessions or as an intensive program including a home-based unit.

Primitive Reflex Integration

Addressing retained reflexes that influence learning and regulation

Retained primitive reflexes can contribute to learning difficulties, attention challenges, coordination difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia and anxiety. We use evidence-informed approaches including Rhythmic Movement Training International (RMTi) and Harkla reflex training resources.

Sensory Attachment Intervention (SAI)

Combining ASI with attachment theory for trauma-informed care

An integrative approach combining Ayres Sensory Integration and Patricia Crittenden’s Dynamic Maturational Model of Attachment. Particularly powerful for children and families who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect or high levels of early stress.

Wilbarger Therapressure Protocol (DPPT)

Advanced sensory defensiveness treatment

An advanced treatment program addressing sensory defensiveness through the consistent application of Deep Pressure and Proprioceptive Technique. Requires advanced training and must be embedded within a comprehensive OT program.

Therapeutic Listening Program (TLP)

Sound-based intervention supporting regulation and attention

A sound-based intervention using electronically modified music to support the auditory system’s connection to motor control, regulation, attention, learning and emotional processing. Therapist-prescribed and implemented at home or in educational settings.

Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding

Play-based feeding therapy respecting sensory profiles

A play-based, evidence-informed feeding approach developed by Dr Kay Toomey. Supports children to build comfort with food through gradual, positive exposure — respecting sensory profiles and developmental readiness.

Circle of Security®

Evidence-based program supporting secure attachment

An evidence-based program supporting secure attachment between child and parent-carer. Offered as a group program for parent-carers and educators, or as individual sessions.
