What We Support

Occupational therapy supports far more than you might expect.
Children & Families

It’s the everyday things that matter.

Occupational Therapy supports children to participate in the things they need and want to do every day. From getting dressed and joining in at school, to playing with friends, sleeping well, managing big feelings or learning to ride a bike.

Sometimes the challenge is easy to see. Sometimes we need to look a little closer at what’s happening beneath the surface.

Our OTs work alongside children and families to understand what’s getting in the way and find practical ways to support participation in everyday life.

Ways OT can support your child.

Support looks different for every child, but these are some of the areas our OTs commonly work across

Emotional Regulation

Children experience emotions and regulation in different ways. We help families understand what may be happening beneath the surface and explore strategies, environments and supports that help their child feel safe, connected and able to participate.

Sensory Processing

Every child experiences sensory information differently. We help children and families understand individual sensory needs and preferences, and find practical ways to support comfort, regulation and participation at home, school and in the community.

Sleep & Rest

When falling asleep, staying asleep or settling into bedtime is difficult, it can affect the whole family. OT can explore the sensory, environmental, regulation and routine factors that may be influencing sleep and help families find approaches that work for them.

Feeding & Mealtimes

We support children who experience challenges around eating and mealtimes, including selective eating, sensory differences around food, using cutlery, sitting at the table and developing the skills needed for safe and comfortable eating.

Toileting

Toileting involves much more than simply learning to use the toilet. We can support children with body awareness, routines, sequencing, clothing, wiping and other factors that can make toileting challenging.

Self-Care & Daily Living Skills

Getting dressed, brushing teeth, showering, managing fastenings, tying shoelaces and looking after personal hygiene are all important everyday occupations. OT can help children develop skills and find adaptations that support greater participation and independence.

Play

Play is one of childhood’s most important occupations. We support children to participate in play in ways that are meaningful to them, from exploring toys and imaginative play to games, playgrounds, sport and shared play with others.

Social Participation

Friendships and social situations can look different for every child. We support children to understand and navigate social experiences, communicate their needs and participate in relationships and communities in ways that feel authentic to them.

Executive Functioning & Attention

Planning, remembering, organising, starting tasks and moving between activities are skills we use throughout everyday life. OT can help children understand what supports their brain and develop practical strategies for home, school and increasing independence.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are involved in so many everyday activities, including drawing, cutting, using cutlery, doing up buttons, typing and opening containers. We support children to develop skills and explore adaptations that make these tasks more accessible.

Handwriting

Handwriting draws on many different skills, including fine motor control, visual perception, posture, motor planning and letter formation. We look beneath the writing itself to understand what may be making it difficult and what support could help.

Gross Motor Skills

From crawling and climbing to running, jumping, balancing, riding a bike and ball skills, we support children to develop the movement skills they need to participate in everyday activities, play and recreation.

School & Learning

School asks children to manage much more than academic learning. We can support participation across classroom routines, transitions, attention, organisation, managing belongings, written work, playgrounds, lunch and other parts of the school day.

Everyday Responsibilities

Things like packing a school bag, making the bed, helping with laundry, preparing simple food, caring for a pet or contributing around the home can all build participation and independence. OT can help break everyday tasks down and find approaches that work for the individual child.

Transitions & Growing Independence

As children grow, the things expected of them change too. OT can support children and young people through transitions and increasing independence, from starting school and managing new routines to developing life skills and preparing for work.

Everyday life is where OT happens.

Your child doesn’t need to be finding all of these things difficult. Sometimes it’s one small part of the day that isn’t working quite as well as you’d like.

If something is getting in the way of your child’s participation, comfort or independence, talk to us. We can help you understand what might be happening and whether OT could help.
